Our Story

JL Construction Services, LLC was started in 2012 by Jesse Langebartels after a few years working in the commercial construction industry revealed an obvious need for an improved subcontractor experience. It could be done more professionally with better communication, better quality and better supervision. Initially, JLCS was set up to begin performing side projects but it didn’t take long for Jesse to realize that construction experience and a vision didn’t exactly translate to business acumen and the business was shelved.

Fast forward to 2015 and that hurdle was cleared when he married Abby Langebartels. She had a Bachelor of Science from Penn State University in Finance, a minor in Economics and Juris Doctorate from Indiana University Mauer School of Law. She had eight years of experience at Ice Miller where she largely focused on real estate litigation which meant she was regularly representing construction businesses in a variety of situations. In addition to her law experience, she served as Secretary of the Board for Habitat For Humanity for six years.

Shortly after Jesse and Abby married, they bought an outdated mid-century modern home and renovated it to its former glory. It was during this renovation that they began to discuss the possibility of reviving JL Construction Services. In 2017, the stars aligned and JL Construction Services was brought back to life. This time around, Abby was able to spearhead the business operations as Jesse lead the field operations. While she was still employed elsewhere, she regularly worked long into the night creating the company’s operating agreement and formation documents, employee handbook, safety policy, procedure manuals and form subcontractor agreements.

Where Jesse’s vision for a better subcontracting experience brought JLCS to life, Abby’s vision of operating a business based on core values of People First, Quality and Professionalism made it possible to grow the business into so much more. Together, they consistently pushed these values, developing JLCS into what it is today – a diverse, team-oriented group of people striving to be the best in the industry – a family.

Our vision and values are the filter through which decisions are made on everything from who we will hire, to which clients we are willing to work for, to overall direction of the company. The Company has certainly seen its ups and downs over the years, and through it all has continued to persevere and believe in the vision first created back in 2017. We are excited for the future as we continue to grow and serve clients with exceptional results!
